Every Letter Has a Price
At first glance, Smush looks like a straightforward word game. Nine letters sit in a 3×3 grid, waiting to be turned into words. A few rounds later, it becomes clear that vocabulary is only half the challenge. Every letter outside the center tile comes with a limited supply. Use one too often, and it disappears forever. Suddenly, common words become expensive decisions. A short word might score points now, but it could also consume letters needed for something much bigger later.
Thinking Beyond the Next Word
The golden letter in the middle is the one constant. Every word must include it, yet it never runs out. Everything else feels temporary. That creates an unusual kind of strategy. Sometimes the highest-scoring word isn't the best play. A player might save certain letters for future combinations, hoping to squeeze more value from the board before resources start disappearing. The puzzle gradually changes as tiles are exhausted. Words that were possible early in the game may become impossible by the end.
Chasing Multipliers
Smush rewards players who plan ahead. One of the most satisfying moments comes from "smushing" a letter by using it for the fifth and final time. Doing so removes the tile from the board and doubles the value of that word. There's also the spicy letter, marked with a pepper icon, which grants another scoring boost whenever it appears in a word. Because the spicy tile changes location after every turn, each decision feels a little different from the last.
The Hunt for the Pangram
Every daily puzzle hides at least one word that uses all nine letters. Finding it is often the highlight of a session. Some players spend the entire game searching for that elusive combination. Others stumble across it by accident and walk away with a huge score bonus. With limited resources, shifting opportunities, and a fresh board every day, Smush turns a simple word search into a puzzle about timing, efficiency, and knowing when to spend the letters you can never get back.
